Web Intelligence Data Sources

See which database engines, universes and other sources your Web Intelligence documents use, and which documents have too many data providers.

Goal

Web Intelligence documents can read from relational databases, SAP BW (BEx queries), SAP HANA, Excel and CSV files and more. Before a database retirement, a licence review or a performance clean-up you need to know, per document: which engines, which universes, and how many data providers.

Who

BI administrators, architects and report developers.

Before you begin

  • MetaMiner collects Web Intelligence detail for the environment. See Document Processing.
  • You can run queries in Meta Query (permission Tab: Meta Query) or connect to the MMDB directly.

Steps

Which database engines do my documents use?

  1. Download a1-webi-dataproviders-by-database.sql.
  2. Open it in the Meta Query tab.
  3. Replace YOUR_CMS_ID_HERE with the CMSID of your environment. In the Meta Query editor, right-click and choose Insert Env ID.
  4. Edit the WHERE clause at the end to the engines you are interested in. As shipped, it keeps only documents that use Microsoft Access together with SQL Server, Oracle or PostgreSQL.
  5. Run the query. The result has one row per document, with the number of data providers (nbr_dps) and a Yes column per database engine.

Find complex documents

Documents with many data providers take longer to process. Change the nbr_dps > n condition at the end of the script to list documents with more than n data providers.

Video walk-through:

Which universes and connections do they use?

  1. Run MM-D01 Activity and Data Source to list documents per universe with their activity.
  2. Or download reports-to-datasources.sql and run it in Meta Query.
  3. For documents on SAP HANA or OLAP sources, use webi-hana-olap-impact.sql.

See it in a browser

Open the Web Intelligence dashboard of the Web Console for document and data provider views without writing SQL.

Expected result

A list of Web Intelligence documents by database engine, universe and number of data providers, ready to filter in Excel or to feed an impact analysis.
