Connection Remap¶
Swap the database connection used by Web Intelligence free-hand SQL data providers or by .unx universes, and change the logon of BI connections, without opening each object in the SAP tools.
License and permission
- Remap Connections... (Web Intelligence and UNX) needs the Remap Universe permission on the environment.
- Modify Connection... needs the Modify Connection permission.
- Permissions are set per role in the MetaMiner Administrator. See Permissions Reference and Editions and Licensing.
- The MetaMiner Server writes the change with the service account of the environment; that account needs edit rights on the documents, universes and connections.
Which command to use¶
All three commands are in the right-click Modify menu of the CMS Explorer.
| Selected object | Command | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Web Intelligence document | Remap Connections... (Free-Hand SQL) | The connection of free-hand SQL data providers in the document |
| .unx universe | Remap Connections... | The connection(s) the universe uses; the universe is republished |
| Relational or OLAP connection | Modify Connection... | Connection user name and password |
To change the universe behind a document instead, use Universe Remap.
Before you begin¶
- Load the environment and select the objects in the CMS Explorer. Selections can span several objects of the same kind.
- The target connection must exist in the same environment and must have been pulled by MetaMiner.
- Test the target connection in the CMC or Information Design Tool first.
Remap a Web Intelligence free-hand SQL connection¶
- Select one or more Web Intelligence documents.
- Right-click and choose Modify > Remap Connections... (Free-Hand SQL). The Connection Remapper dialog opens with the columns Original Connection, Target Connection and Status.
- Right-click a data provider and choose Select Target Connection... (or double-click the row), then pick the connection.
- Optional: tick Copy Webi reports before remap operation and choose a Copy name pattern (
Copy of %NAME%,Copy of %ID%,Copy of %CUID%). The copy is changed and the original is left as is. - Click OK, or Run in Background to receive the results by e-mail.
- Review the Connection Remapper Results dialog: one row per document with SUCCESS or FAILED.

Remap the connection of a .unx universe¶
- Select one or more .unx universes.
- Right-click and choose Modify > Remap Connections.... The Connection Remapper dialog lists each universe and the connections it references.
- Right-click a connection row and choose Select Target Connection....
- Click OK or Run in Background.
- MetaMiner republishes each universe with the new connection reference.

Note
The UNX remap has no copy option. Back up the universe first, for example with Save > Save as BIAR Backup... (see Export to CMS and LCM).
Change the logon of BI connections¶
- Select one or more connections (in the connections folder of the CMS Explorer).
- Right-click and choose Modify > Modify Connection.... The Modify Connections dialog lists Name, Connection Type, Username and Password.
- Right-click a cell and choose Modify Value.... Enter the new value and choose the scope:
- Apply to all connections
- Apply to all connections with same current value
- Click OK to write the changes.

TODO: confirm which connection types support Modify Connection
Source check: test against a relational (.cnx/.cns), OLAP and BW connection on BI 4.3.
Verify¶
- The results dialog lists each object with its status.
- After the next pull, Relationships and Structure shows the new connection for the document or universe.
- Refresh one changed document in BI launch pad to confirm it reaches the new database.
Troubleshooting¶
The remap command is greyed out
The selection mixes object kinds, or your role lacks Remap Universe (or Modify Connection) on one of the environments.
A universe fails to republish
The service account needs rights to retrieve and publish the universe and to use the target connection. Check the error text in the results dialog and the server log (server.log).
