Connect to a Server¶
Use the Connection Manager to connect the MetaMiner Client (MMC) to a MetaMiner Server (MMS), choose the BusinessObjects environments to load, and log on.
Before you begin¶
- The MMS is installed and running, and at least one BusinessObjects environment is enabled in the MetaMiner Administrator (MMA). See Add an Environment.
- The client machine can reach the MMS port (default
49714). See Network Ports and Firewall. - If the MMS uses MetaMiner user security, you have a MetaMiner user name and password. See Users and Roles.
- The client and the server run the same MetaMiner release.
Open the Connection Manager¶
The Connection Manager opens automatically when the client starts. To open it later, use any of these:
- File > Connection Manager... (Ctrl+M)
- Double-click the connection icon in the status bar.
- Click Add or enable environments on the empty main window.
If Reconnect on startup was ticked at your last connection, the client reconnects to the same server and environments without showing the dialog.

Steps¶
- Pick a server from the auto-detected list, or type the MetaMiner Server Host: and MetaMiner Server Port: (default
49714). Auto-detection uses network multicast. If no server appears, firewall rules may block it; type the host name and continue. - Click Connect. The client connects to the MMS and lists the environments you have access to under Select one or more BI environments:.
- If prompted, enter your MetaMiner user name and password. Tick Remember password to skip this prompt next time.
- Tick the Enabled box of each environment you want to load. Environments you loaded last time are pre-selected.
- Optional: tick Reconnect on startup.
- Click Apply. The client logs on to each environment that requires it, then opens the loading progress dialog.
- Wait for every environment to finish loading. The tabs appear and the client returns to the tab you used last.
Environment list columns¶
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Enabled | Tick to load this environment in the client |
| Name | Environment name as configured in the MMA |
| Host | CMS host name |
| Version | BusinessObjects version |
| Username | BusinessObjects account the MMS uses for this environment |
| Status | Connection status reported by the MMS |
| Audit DB | Whether an audit database is configured for this environment |
BusinessObjects logon¶
When an environment is configured to require each MetaMiner user's own BusinessObjects logon, Apply opens the Log on to BusinessObjects - <environment> dialog before loading that environment. You then see only the content your BusinessObjects account can see. Administrators configure this in the MMA; see BusinessObjects User Logon.
| Field | What it does |
|---|---|
| Authentication: | secEnterprise, secLDAP or secWinAD |
| User name, Password | Your BusinessObjects credentials. The password is sent encrypted to the MMS and is not stored by the client. |
| Use for all BusinessObjects environments | Uses the same credentials for every other environment that is waiting for a logon |
| Remember me on this computer | Keeps a BusinessObjects logon token (not the password) on this computer so the next start does not prompt. Available only when the administrator allows remembered logons. |
If you cancel the dialog, that environment is not loaded for this connection.
While the MMS prepares the list of objects visible to your account, loading can pause on that environment. Large environments can take several minutes the first time.
Use the File menu to manage BusinessObjects logons after you connect:
| Menu item | What it does |
|---|---|
| File > Log on to BusinessObjects | Log on to an environment that is still waiting for a logon |
| File > Log off BusinessObjects | Log off one environment |
| File > Refresh BusinessObjects access | Ask the MMS to recompute what your account can see (for example after a group change in BusinessObjects), then reload that environment |
The status bar shows the BusinessObjects user you are logged on as. Click it to refresh.
Loading progress¶

The progress dialog shows one row per environment:
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Environment | Environment name |
| Loaded Module | Last module completely loaded on the MMS |
| Percentage | Share of modules loaded on the MMS for this environment |
| Data Type | Type of object the MMS is processing now |
| Object | Object the MMS is processing now |
| Elapsed | Time spent on the current object |
If the MMS is still pulling an environment, its row keeps updating until the pull finishes. To continue without one environment, right-click its row and choose Skip and Disable. The other environments load normally.
To stop loading entirely, click Cancel. Data loaded so far is discarded and the Connection Manager opens again.
Verify¶
- The status bar connection icon is green and shows the server name.
- The CMS Explorer tab shows one top-level node per loaded environment.
- The status bar shows the time the data was loaded.
Troubleshooting¶
Login Required, Authentication Failed or Password Expired
The MMS uses MetaMiner user security. Enter a valid user name and password. When the password has expired, enter the old and the new password. Password changes are not allowed for LDAP or Active Directory users; change those in the directory. Click Forgot your password? to send a reset request to your MetaMiner administrators.
Login Failure User Disabled or Login Failure Threshold Reached
Your account was disabled or locked after failed logons. Contact your MetaMiner administrator.
Password Required (master password)
The MMS is protected by a single master password instead of user accounts. Enter the password your administrator gave you.
No CMS configured, or environments are configured but you don't have access
No environment is enabled on the MMS, or your MetaMiner account has no permission on any of them. Ask your administrator to enable an environment in the MMA or grant you access.
Incompatible Versions
The client and the server are from different MetaMiner releases. Install the client that ships with your server release. See Install the Client. A difference in build number only shows a warning.
The server is starting
The MMS accepts connections before it finishes starting. The dialog says you will be connected automatically as soon as it is ready; leave it open.
Certificate warning on connect
The MMS uses SSL and its certificate chain is not trusted on this computer. Do not accept untrusted certificates in production. Import the issuing CA certificate as described in SSL Overview, then connect again.
TODO: confirm which certificate store the client trusts (Java trust store of the client install or the Windows store) and link the exact procedure page
Source to check: client SSL setup page in the Security tab.
Connection Failed or Connection Timeout
Check the host name and port, that the MMS service is running, and that the firewall allows the port. See Connection Problems.
