MetaMiner Installation Overview

Prerequisites

I can't wait to install MetaMiner - what are the bare minimum requirements?

Well, it depends. But in general, we recommend users to have at least:

  • Windows 2008/2012/2016
  • 2 cpu
  • 4gb RAM (dedicated to MetaMiner)
  • 50gb disk space

If your total combined number of SAP BusinessObjects environments (known as your "BI Landscape") has the following concurrent user metrics, the table below offers recommended sizings:

What do we mean by concurrent users? It's a bit different from typical BusinessObjects concurrent user licenses. In MetaMiner terms, a concurrent user is a user who is actively using the system during the same time other users are using the system. For example, if Joe is on the system at 10:00am and Mary is also on the system at 10:00am, and no one else is on the system, we call this 2 concurrent users. The numbers in the table below reflect the peak number of concurrent users typically found on your BusinessObjects system. You can get this number by looking at the CMC > Sessions page during periods of highest use and count the distinct user names logged on.

BusinessObjects Environments

# Concurrent Users Server/OS RAM (gb) CPU/cores Disk Storage (gb)
0-50 Windows 2012+ 4 2 60
51-100 Windows 2012+ 4 4 80
101-150 Windows 2012+ 8 4 120
151-300 Windows 2012+ 10 4 200
300+ Windows 2012+ 10 8 400

Tableau Environments

# Concurrent Users Server/OS RAM (gb) CPU/cores Disk Storage (gb)
0-50 Windows 2012+ 3 2 60
51-100 Windows 2012+ 4 4 80
101-150 Windows 2012+ 6 4 120
151-300 Windows 2012+ 8 4 200
300+ Windows 2012+ 8 8 400

Tableau Specific Requirements

You may have noticed that the RAM requirement for MetaMiner Tableau are more than BusinessObjects. This is by design to support the real-time Tableau Metadata Finder feature for MetaMiner Tableau Impact Analysis.

What if I have both SAP BusinessObjects and Tableau?

No problem! Take the higher of the two environments' specifications: That is what you'll want to have before deploying MetaMiner.

Backup, Versioning & Promotion Requirements

If you plan on using these features, its recommended that you add additional disk space to your MetaMiner server, or, use a NAS-connected or UNC storage area and configure MetaMiner to use that location.

How does MetaMiner connect to my SAP BusinessObjects environment? With what CMC account?

Think of MetaMiner like a ghost user with an endless amount of energy, precision and memory who can open, review and remember every detail about every report and each universe it uses, the people who accessed it and more. She can also research old content, delete or archive unused Crystal reports and even send notifications to users who keep refreshing long-running reports. This user has a name and it must be defined in the MetaMiner Administrator New/Edit CMS Configuration dialog.

For maximum effectiveness, the user – who we will refer to as the “MetaMinerAdmin” should belong directly to the CMC’s Administrators group and the Administrators group in you SAP BusinessObjects landscape should have complete and total access to that environments complete information (all users, folders, reports, etc.).

In many installations this “service” account created in the CMC is called MetaMinerAdmin or similar.
NOTE MetaMinerAdmin will also be associated with audit events when MetaMiner extracts various information and details of the BI platform by opening reports, logging on/off the system and more. This is another reason why its important to have a dedicated user like MetaMinerAdmin to configure your SAP BusinessObjects environment with MetaMiner.
So we can strip these results from auditing data easily ( ..where audit.user_name != ‘MetaMinerAdmin’) and not pollute our statistics.

Do I need to configure MetaMiner with my BusinessObjects Audit and CMS databases?

Yes, making sure MetaMiner can connect to these databases is critical to MetaMiner’s performing optimally. The Audit DB is required in order to provide MetaMiner historical information and usage patterns of the BI landscape.

The CMS DB is required in order to accelerate performance of data collection and monitor availability of CMS services in the event your SAP BusinessObjects environment becomes unavailable. After all, the CMC cannot monitor itself if the CMS goes down. Fortunately, MetaMiner has no such dependency with the CMS.

Is MetaMiner going to write to my CMS or Audit DB? (short answer = No)

MetaMiner will never write to your Audit or CMS DB. In fact, we only create read-only connections internally from MetaMiner to these databases.
But for added safety and peace of mind, if needed, we advise installations to create read-only database accounts for their CMS and AUDIT DB schemas and use those accounts when configuring BusinessObjects environments in MetaMiner Administrator.
