Edit, Disable or Remove

Change a Power BI environment's credentials or capacity metrics datasets, pause its collection without losing data, or remove it from MetaMiner.

Before you begin

  • MMA is running as administrator.
  • Disabling or removing an environment hides it from MetaMiner Client (MMC) users. Tell them first.
  • Plan a server restart: environment changes take effect when the MetaMiner Server (MMS) next starts.

Steps

Edit an environment

  1. In BI Environments, select the environment and click Edit (or double-click the row).
  2. Change fields in Edit Power BI Environment. See Environment Fields.
  3. Click Apply. MMA validates again; see Validate the Connection.
  4. Restart the server: Stop Server, then Start Server.

When validation passes, MMA saves the changes and keeps the environment enabled or disabled as it was. When it fails, MMA still saves the changes, marks the environment Failed and disables it.

Rotate the client secret before it expires

Create the new secret in Microsoft Entra ID, paste it into Client Secret, click Apply and restart the server. Delete the old secret in Entra ID only after validation passes. See Client Secret.

Disable or enable an environment

  1. Clear or check the Enabled check box of the environment. To change all at once, right-click the table and choose Enable All or Disable All.
  2. MMA saves immediately.
  3. Restart the server.

A disabled environment is not collected and does not appear in MMC. Its metadata stays in the MetaMiner Database (MMDB). When you enable it again, collectors resume from their stored progress. Activity events older than about 30 days at that point are no longer available from Microsoft.

An environment with status Failed cannot be enabled until a validation passes. On an MMDB older than PostgreSQL 16, Power BI environments cannot be enabled at all.

Remove an environment

  1. Select the environment and click Delete.
  2. Confirm "Are you sure you want to delete <name> environment?".
  3. Restart the server.

MMA removes the environment from the configuration and records the change in admin.log. At the next start MMS marks the environment as deleted in the MMDB and stops collecting it.

Metadata remains in the MMDB

Removing an environment stops collection but does not remove the metadata already in the MMDB.

TODO: document how to purge a removed tenant's metadata from the MMDB

Product to confirm whether the weekly retention jobs ever remove a deleted environment's data, and the supported purge procedure (support script or none). See Data Retention.

MetaMiner Security

If MetaMiner Security is on and no user has a role other than No Access on an environment, MMA warns that the environment will not be visible in MMC until you assign a role. See Users and Roles.

Verify

  • The Enabled column and the counter above the table show the expected state.
  • After the restart, server\logs\statereport.log lists the environment under "Configured Power BI Environments" with + when enabled or - when disabled.
  • admin.log shows the change.

Troubleshooting

Can not enable connection

Your license limits the number of enabled environments. Disable another environment first, or contact Infolytik about your license.

The environment failed validation and cannot be enabled

Double-click the environment, fix the cause shown in the message and click Apply. It can be enabled once validation passes.

My change has no effect

Restart the server. MMS reads Power BI environment settings when it starts.
