Add an Environment¶
Connect a Microsoft Fabric / Power BI tenant to MetaMiner so the MetaMiner Server (MMS) starts collecting its metadata, activity and capacity metrics.
Before you begin¶
- MMA is running as administrator on the MetaMiner Server machine.
- The Microsoft setup is complete: app registration, API permissions, client secret, security group and tenant settings. Use the Setup Checklist.
- You have the tenant ID, the application (client) ID and the client secret value of the app registration.
- Optional: the semantic model ID of each Fabric Capacity Metrics app you want to collect. See Capacity Metrics Datasets.
- The MetaMiner Server can reach the Microsoft endpoints for your cloud. See Network and Microsoft Endpoints.
- The MMDB runs on PostgreSQL 16 or newer. See External PostgreSQL.
- Your license includes Power BI and allows another enabled environment. See Editions and Licensing.
- The MetaMiner Server is stopped. Add Power BI is disabled while it runs.
Steps¶
- In the MMA main window, click Stop Server if the server is running.
- Click Add Power BI. The Add Power BI Environment dialog opens.
- Under Power BI System Configuration, enter Display name:, the name users see in the MetaMiner Client (MMC).
- In Endpoint Set, keep Commercial unless the tenant is in a US Government cloud. See Sovereign Clouds.
- Enter Tenant ID, Client ID and Client Secret.
- Leave Username: and Password: empty unless Infolytik asked you to fill them. See Environment Fields.
- Under FCM Datasets & Capacities, do one of the following:
- To collect capacity metrics, click Add, paste a Fabric Capacity Metrics semantic model ID, and choose the capacities to collect. See Capacity Metrics Datasets.
- Otherwise check Ignore FCM at this time. Without a dataset and without this check box, validation reports the capacity metrics step as failed.
- Optional: click Test Connection to run the validation without saving. A results dialog lists each step.
- Click Apply. MMA validates the environment; see Validate the Connection.
- When all steps pass, MMA closes the dialog, adds the environment to BI Environments and enables it.
- Click Start Server.

Save Anyway
If a step fails after you click Apply, the results dialog offers Save Anyway. MMA then saves the environment with status Failed and leaves it disabled. Fix the cause, edit the environment and click Apply again before you enable it. See Edit, Disable or Remove.
One environment per tenant
MMA refuses a second environment with a tenant ID that is already configured. Edit the existing environment instead.
MetaMiner Security
If MetaMiner Security is on and no user has a role other than No Access on the new environment, MMA warns that it will not be visible in MMC until you assign a role. See Users and Roles.
Verify¶
- The environment shows Validated in the Status column and Enabled is checked.
- A few minutes after Start Server, the tenant appears in the MMC Power BI Explorer. Workspace inventory fills in over the first collection cycles.
- See Verify the First Collection for the full check.
Troubleshooting¶
Add Power BI is greyed out
The server is running, or your license does not include Power BI. Click Stop Server. If the button is still missing, check the license in Help > About.
A validation step fails
Each failed step shows a reason and a hint. See Validate the Connection and Validation Errors.
Power BI environments require PostgreSQL 16 or newer
The MMDB runs an older PostgreSQL version. Contact Infolytik Support for the upgrade path.
